Balloon Fiesta, Albuquerque, New Mexico 2014

Balloon Fiesta started Saturday, Oct. 4th.  We arose at 3 am to a clear, cold morning with light winds, a promising first day of the fiesta.  We didn’t want to miss a thing, with the first event being the dawn patrol at 5:45, followed by a morning glow at 6:30 and then the mass ascension at 7:00 am.  Leaving that early helped us to avoid traffic jams and to park quickly, even enableing us to find an empty picnic table.  With the lows in the 50’s, and lots of time to wait for the first event, it didn’t take long to start feeling the cold in our bones.   Coffee and hot chocolate helped warm us, if only shortlived.  Once the sun comes up, it warms up very fast, but until then, brrrrrrrr!  Nothing started on time, so I kept moving my legs and arms trying to generate some heat. Sunrays on my back have never felt so good.  In spite of the cold, the morning glow was good although not that many balloons participated.  Photographing in the dark can be challenging too, at least for me.

The mass ascension was awesome!  There were so many balloons, lots of colors and special shaped ones too.   My favorites were the pig, cow, frog, tweety bird….. well, just about all of them.  Not all of them took to the sky, sadly not the cow, but most did.  We were lucky to have such a good morning for it, because the Sunday morning mass ascension was cancelled due to windy conditions.

Darth Vader and Yoda showed up along with some characters from Star Wars.

We returned to the campground before lunch time, and I believe most of us took afternoon naps.  The day was ended by a gathering where everyone brought an appetizer.  What a great ending to a wonderful day!

Sunday evening, eight of us return to the Balloon Fiesta for the balloon glow and fireworks.  Both were magnificent and I hated the others missed it.  The fireworks display was one of the best I have ever seen.  Evening pictures can be hard to take, but I had some to turn out well.
